Our Origin Story: Kensington Design House Featured in Canvas Rebel
Every architecture and design studio has an origin story. Ours did not begin in a corporate boardroom, but rather over decades of building homes together and realizing that the physical spaces we inhabited were actively shaping our mental and physical health.
We recently sat down with Canvas Rebel magazine to share the personal journey behind Kensington Design House. The feature explores our transition to Charleston and how we built a practice that bridges two distinct disciplines. We discuss how Rich’s 30 years of commercial and residential architecture and construction experience provides the rigorous structural foundation, while Elizabeth’s background in psychology and Science in Design ensures every space is optimized for the nervous system.
It is a deeply personal interview about why we believe interior design and architecture should be treated as branches of wellness and behavioral science.
Key Takeaways from our Interview
The Catalyst: How our own experiences designing and building homes for different stages of our lives revealed the profound impact a physical environment has on daily stress and restoration.
A Dual Approach: Why successful wellness architecture requires both structural expertise and a deep understanding of human psychology.
Designing for the Lifespan: Our philosophy on creating adaptable spaces that support homeowners as they age to extend both health and comfort.
The Charleston Chapter: What drew us to the Lowcountry and how the local landscape influences our connection to nature and biophilic design.
