Where Does the Eye Land? Translating Intuition into Architecture
When clients begin a project, they rarely bring us floor plans; they bring us pictures. They do this because it is incredibly difficult to articulate how you want a home to work, but it is easy to point to an image and say, "I want to feel like this."
People often ask if Rich and I have different reactions when we walk into a room to try and capture that feeling. The truth is, we rarely disagree on the energy of a space; we just approach it using two different languages.
It isn't that my perspective is less; it is that Rich is an architect. He is explicitly trained to think in terms of spatial mechanics. When I can feel that a space is failing, that the energy feels stuck or the body cannot settle, Rich steps in to diagnose why. His architectural training allows him to immediately identify the disruptions in circulation, proportion or natural airflow that are causing that friction. I identify the symptom; he identifies the architectural cause.
We know how deeply this matters because we have experienced the alternative. During a particularly stressful chapter of our lives, our previous home in New Castle actually helped to bring me calm. A deeply saturated, cozy blue room and a porch completely open to nature provided immediate comfort. It acted as an anchor for my nervous system.
When clients bring us those inspiration pictures, they are really just asking for that same anchoring feeling. But at Kensington Design House, we do not just rely on my intuition or Rich's architectural training to build it. We validate it with science.
We are an overwhelmingly visual species
Through my Science in Design® certification, I’ve been studying more about just how much visual information we take in at any given moment.
One estimate discussed during the program suggests that approximately 11 million bits of sensory information travel toward the brain each second, with roughly 10 million arriving through the eyes. The number is an estimate, and it does not mean that 90 percent of the brain is visual. It does, however, offer some perspective on how much of our experience begins with what we see.
Much of that initial visual response also begins before conscious interpretation.
We do not enter a room, carefully examine every element and then decide how to respond. The mind and body begin receiving the space immediately. Contrast, light, edges, openings, faces, objects and movement all compete for attention before we have consciously formed an opinion.
A home is being experienced before it is being evaluated.
This is something we have spoken about from the beginning at Kensington Design House. We talk about visual rest, environmental ease and creating rooms that allow people to feel both oriented and settled.
Making the invisible visible
As part of my certification, I discovered a tool that finally visualizes what the body already knows.
Visual Attention Software (VAS) predicts exactly where the eye will look in the first few seconds of seeing a space. It cannot measure beauty or emotion. What it does is reveal whether a room forces your eye to constantly search or allows it to finally rest.
This changes everything about how we work with our clients. When we recommend moving a wall or shifting a layout, we do not just ask for their trust. We show them the data. We use VAS to prove exactly why an architectural change is necessary to bring the nervous system down.
That is why I applied it to our Woodview project.
It is hard to explain the difference between a restless room and a grounded one unless you are standing inside it. VAS gave us a way to objectively capture the friction we felt in the original space and prove how the redesign solved it.
Before, the eye kept searching
When we studied the original image of Woodview, the results felt immediately familiar. Looking at the heat map in the below image, you can see attention scattered in isolated pockets. The eye moved toward the glare reflected across the floor, the ceiling fixtures, the bright openings and the hard edges of the doorways. These were not meaningful focal points or places connected to the way someone might live in the room. They were simply the strongest areas of contrast, and in the absence of a clearer visual hierarchy, they became the places the eye noticed first.

Seeing those patterns mapped out in the predicted gaze sequence in the below image was surprisingly powerful because it reflected exactly what we had already sensed.

The sequence shows the eye jumping erratically from the floor reflection to the wall to the ceiling fixture. The room offered plenty to look at, yet none of it gave the gaze a reason to remain. Attention moved from one architectural interruption to another without finding a clear destination.
The room was nearly empty, but it was not restful.
We often assume that removing objects will automatically create calm, yet an empty space can still place considerable demand on the eye. When there is no intentional focal point, no visual rhythm and no obvious relationship between the elements in a room, incidental details begin to take on more importance than they deserve.
A reflection on the floor, an exposed fixture or an awkward opening can become visually dominant simply because the room has offered nothing more meaningful in its place.
This is the distinction we have been trying to describe in our work.
Visual rest does not come from emptiness alone. It comes from order, hierarchy and the feeling that the eye understands where it is and what matters within the space.
In the original room, the gaze kept searching because there was nowhere meaningful for it to land.
After, the eye found the life of the room
The completed image told a different story.

As shown in the vibrant heat map of the renovated kitchen above, attention consolidated beautifully. It moved toward the kitchen, the counter, the woven stools, the seating and the textured places where people would actually live. The eye was drawn toward cooking, gathering, sitting and the small rituals of an ordinary day.
The finished room contains far more than the original room did. There are furnishings, lighting, objects, material transitions, pattern and texture, yet the attention is far less scattered.
The design did not remove visual information. It organized it.
Looking at the new gaze sequence below, instead of being caught by glare and unrelated architectural edges, the eye moved in a logical rhythm among elements that belonged to the same experience.

The woven surfaces, natural materials, shelving, seating and lighting created visual interest, but that interest was connected to the way the room was meant to be inhabited.
The gaze still moved, as it should. A successful room does not force the eye to remain fixed in one place. It invites discovery, rhythm and moments of interest.
Visual rest does not mean that nothing attracts attention. It means that attention has structure.
The eye can understand what it is seeing. It can move through the room without being pulled in every direction. It can find a place to pause.
The renovation did not simply give the room more to look at. It gave the eye a clearer understanding of what mattered.
The door that kept attracting attention
One part of the result initially gave me pause.
The entrance door remained one of the strongest visual elements in the completed image, commanding an intense 98 percent probability of attracting attention in the below image. That might surprise some people, but not us.

Our eyes are naturally drawn toward openings, entrances, light and contrast. These features help us orient ourselves. They give us information about where we are, how we entered and where we might move next.
The problem is not that the eye notices the door.
The question is what happens afterward.
In the original room, attention continued moving among unrelated distractions. In the completed room, the entrance remained clear, but the gaze also seamlessly moved inward toward the kitchen, seating, texture and the places where daily life would unfold.
A room needs to help us understand where we are. It also needs to give us a reason to remain.
Good design allows both to happen.
The result I did not expect
We also studied an image of another completed living room with a strong relationship to the landscape outside.
Because we speak so often about nature and the connection between inside and outside, I expected the eye to move immediately through the doors toward the exterior view.
It did not, at least not as strongly as I anticipated.
At first, I was disappointed. Then I looked more closely.
The eye had still found nature.
Attention moved toward the tree and plant life, but it was also drawn toward the mossy green tones, natural wood, organic shapes and irregular textures within the room.

Nature was not only beyond the glass. It had been carried inside.
That became one of my favorite discoveries from the exercise.
A connection to nature does not depend entirely on having a dramatic view. It can also be created through the materials we touch, the colors we live with, the patterns surrounding us and the presence of living things.
The exterior landscape still matters, but so does the way the interior continues its story.
The room did not simply point toward nature. It incorporated nature into the experience of being inside.
Seeing what we already felt
We did not use this analysis to allow software to decide whether the design was successful.
We used it to help visualize something we had already felt in the room.
Before the renovation, the eye kept searching. Afterward, it could orient itself, move through the space and settle around the places where people would live.
The technology did not discover the experience. It helped us see what the body had known all along.
That is what continues to fascinate me about the meeting of psychology and design.
A room is never just a collection of furniture, finishes and objects. It is an environment that the mind and body are continuously reading, often before we realize that reading has begun.
We are only beginning to explore how visual attention analysis may inform our process. It could help us compare design concepts, study competing focal points and understand whether a room is drawing attention toward the experience we intended to create.
It will never replace conversation, intuition or the lived experience of the person who calls the space home.
It is simply another lens through which to ask a question that has always mattered to us.
What is this room asking of the person inside it?
Good design does more than catch the eye.
It gives the eye somewhere meaningful to rest.
